One of the main gameplay mechanics centers around Mario venturing through Luigi dreams and manipulating the outside enviroment with the help of Starlow to help Mario solve puzzles to progress. It also features overworld mechanics similar to other Mario & Luigi games.

- As seen in Nintendo Direct 2.14.13 and the teaser trailer for the game, the are several strange bird-like creatures that appear, more so in the teaser trailer.
- The Beanish species from previous installments will make an appearance in this game.
